Home of the Ford Championship weekend, the Homestead-Miami Speedway proudly plays host to final race of the season in the Nextel Sprint series as well as the crowning of the new champion.
The Homestead-Miami Speedway was built in part as a plan to assist the community of Homestead to rebuild after the devastation caused by Hurricane Andrew. In less than a year after the hurricane, the speedway broke ground and this somewhat art deco facility opened in 1995 with a Nascar Busch race as a 1.5 mile speedway.
Initially the Homestead-Miami Speedway opened as a four turn rectangular oval with sharp flat turns and aprons that made passing difficult and overall low speeds. In 1997, the speedway started an $8.2 million reconfiguration project to widen the aprons by 24 feet and change from a quad oval to a continuous oval. Then again in 2003, the turns were once again changed from a mostly flat to a steep banking.
The Homestead Miami Speedway hosts the Sprint Series championship weekend, which includes the Ford 400 Sprint Cup Series Race, the Ford 300 Nationwide Series Race, and the Ford 200 Craftsman Truck Series Race. All of it’s 65,000 seats will be full as this weekend is always a sellout.
